Ha Ha Ha, They’re Laughing Back To The Bank: Jay-Z, Diddy & Kanye West Tops 2011 Forbes Hip-Hop List

Born and raised in the Marcy Projects section of Brooklyn, NY, platinum-selling rapper Shawn Corey Carter aka Jay-Z turned his street hustle into a multi-million dollar business. Some of his investments are Roc Nation Entertainment Company, Rocawear clothing, Carol’s Daughter beauty products, and the New Jersey Net.  Jay-Z is the reigning rapper of New York City, as well as one of the most successful and wealthiest artists in music. Throughout his career which expands over 15 years, Jay-Z sold over 50 million albums worldwide and won 13 Grammy Award. Jay-Z is claiming his fourth Cash Kings crown in five years on Forbes Hip Hop List. He’s # 1 again, Jay-Z earned $37 million.

Music now accounts for less than 20% of earnings for the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, thanks to big stakes in clothing lines Sean John and Enyce,record label Bad Boy and marketing firm Blue Flame. But it’s his Ciroc vodka deal that led FORBES to estimate his net worth at $475 million this winter. Diddy is #2, he earned $35 million.

The self-proclaimed Louis Vuitton Don returns to the top three for the first time since 2009. His new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, hit stores in November, earned critical raves and quickly went platinum. Kanye is #4, he earned $16 million.

Magazine Cover: The FADER Issue #75: Fall Fashion Featuring Frank Ocean

This is very a great year for Frank Ocean. He produced songs for Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Kanye West and now he is on the cover of Issue # 75 Fader magazine. Over the past year or so, Frank Ocean became more ubiquitous than he probably ever imagined. From his heartfelt mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra to his two—TWO!—appearances on Jay-Z and Kanye’s Watch The Throne, the man is (deservedly) everywhere.

When he was nine, Frank Ocean’s godfather subscribed him to Robb Report, a magazine for the ultra-rich. Less interested in fiduciary smarts, it’s a catalog of conspicuous consumption, highlighting tropical vacations, invaluable antiques and, as Ocean came to know, really expensive cars. Though he comes from a middle class family, he obsessively read the magazine’s classified ads, fixating on exorbitantly priced used Bentleys and Maybachs. “I would just fall in love with all their cars. That was the start.” Ocean, whowas born Christopher Breaux (and goes by Lonny to friends), downscaled his material desires, and when he was 13, began going door-to-door, detailing cars for cash. “I would bring all my supplies. Literally, it was like a movie, I had a wagon, those long red wagons, like a Radio Flyer-type wagon, and I used to buy my own soaps.”

My Exclusive Interview With Danita Davis (Owner Of Elusion Clothing)

Growing up Cleveland Heights, Ohio Danita Davis always had a love for men’s fashion and she turned her dream into a reality when she launched Elusion Clothing in 2006. Jay-Z, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are just a few celebrities who were seen rocking tee shirts from her line. For the Fall/Winter 2011 collections, we can expect more affordable clothing with a quality look; which will consist of hoodies, jackets, beanies and more. In the future, Davis is looking to expand her brand and open up a boutique. Davis and I chopped it up for a few and talked about her clothing line, the fashion industry, her inspirations and of course, the empire she’s building. What inspired you to create a clothing line?
Growing up, I always had a love for men’s fashion. I grew up a tomboy(5 brothers), so I always saw the best clothes because of my older brothers and friends. In high school, I designed the senior class tee-shirt. From there, I knew I wanted to do something in fashion.
What is the inspiration behind your clothing line?
Honestly? The people. People inspire me on a daily basis. The style, the creativity, the uniqueness…I want to make the right kind of clothing so I keep a close eye on people, all races and faces, no matter how big or small.
How did you come up with the name of your clothing line and why did you chose to name your clothing line Elusion?
The original name for the brand was Notorious, believe it or not. Then it was Illusion. I changed it to Elusion after each letter, Elevating Life’s unique styles instead of negating. That was the original motto of the line and that’s why it changed from Illu to Elu. People dig it. I hated it for a long time. Lol.
How do you come up with the slogans for the shirts?
Politics, Music, every day life. I listen, I read, I research. A lot of our designs have been more vintage now. I want to make tee shirts now that last forever. With the economy like it is, people want shirts that they can wear with anything, any time of the year. That’s us. That’ll be us for a long time to come.
