2 Chainz Helps Def Jam Receive Their Third Number One Hip-Hop Album In One Month

This week rapper 2 Chainz gives prominent Hip-Hop label Island Def Jam (IDJ) their third number one Hip-Hop album in one month, and fourth number one album this summer. Nas ‘Life Is Good’, Rick Ross’ ‘God Forgives, I Don’t’ and Justin Bieber’s ‘Believe’ albums all debuted at number one on the Billboard top 200, while Frank Ocean’s ‘Channel Orange’ debuted at number two. Combined they all helped the label sale over 1.6 million albums so far this summer.

Thanks to Barry Weiss (Chairman and CEO Island/Def Jam), Steve Bartels (President/COO Island Def Jam Music Group) and Joie Manda (President of Def Jam), IDJ is hotter than the middle of August. Tomorrow Wednesday (August 22), the label is expected to earn their third number one, chart-topping Hip Hop album in one month, thanks to 2 Chainz.

The College Park, Georgia native (2 Chainz) debut solo album ‘Based On A T.R.U. Story’ tops this week charts with 145,809 copies sold in the first week, according to Hits Daily Double. The album’s lead single “No Lie” Ft. Drake sold over 525,000 copies digitally and reached number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/hip-Hop Songs. His new album features a star-studded line-up including Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Drake and boasts productions from some hot producers. Once again, Def Jam sits at the top and 2 Chainz proves that hip-Hop still lives in the Dirty South.

Are The CRITICS Feeling 2 Chainz ‘Based On A T.R.U. Story’?

2 Chainz debut solo album Based On A T.R.U. Story arrived this past Tuesday (August 14). This week the album will top the Billboard 200 with sales in the 130-140k range, according to Hits Daily Double. This makes Def Jam third number one Hip-Hop album in one month and fourth number one album this summer. Nas Life Is Good, Rick Ross’ God Forgives, I Don’t and Justin Bieber’s Believe albums all debuted at number one on the Billboard top 200, while Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange debuted at number two. Combined they all helped the label sale over 1.6 million albums so far this summer.

2 Chainz album features a star-studded line-up including Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Drake and The Dream. The album’s lead single “No Lie” Ft. Drake sold over 525,000 copies digitally and reached number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/hip-Hop Songs. But was this enough to please the critics? Find out below:

Rolling Stone: His commercial solo debut is packed with A-list cameos and producers, but 2 Chainz commands the spotlight—rapping about success and sex with the irrepressible enthusiasm of the upstart he isn’t. 3.5/5

Los Angeles Times: Even guest appearances by Kanye West and Nicki Minaj don’t provide much boost. Other cameos include Drake, The-Dream, and John Legend, and they’re all so much better at their art that rather than their host stepping up to their level, 2 Chainz drags them down. 1/4

USA Today: His major label solo debut offers little more than the typical club anthems and swaggering boasts. Guests provide the best moments. “No Lie” with Drake and “Birthday Song” with Kanye West are as good as it gets. 2/4

The Boston Globe: A highly buzzed about hip-hop artist should make a debut that moves the genre’s dial ahead a notch. Unfortunately, this long-awaited CD from the Georgia MC relies on too many cliches to be a revelation.

The Washington Post: It’s hard to resist repetitive hooks that aren’t exactly catchy or well-constructed but still get stuck in one’s head even after a single listen. … There are laughably simple declarations (“She got a big booty / So I call her Big Booty,” from “Birthday”), but also clever punch lines.

New Music: Lil Wayne “No Lie (Freestyle)”

Yesterday Wednesday (August 15), I reported that Lil Wayne’s Dedication 4 mixtape has been pushed back. This morning Thursday (August 16), a new video of Weezy explaining why the mixtape was pushed back went viral. In the video, he stated that Dedication 4 was pushed back because he didn’t want to take attention away from 2 Chainz’s album, Based On A.T.R.U. Story. To hold the fans off until he drop the mixtape, Weezy releases a freestyle over 2 Chainz’s “No Lie”. Expect the mixtape to drop next week.

2 Chainz Talks To Complex About ‘B.O.A.T.S.’, Critics, Playing College Basketball, G.O.O.D. Music & More

Def Jam’s rapper 2 Chainz debut solo LP, Based On A Tru Story arrives at midnight (Tuesday August 14). The disc will feature guest appearances from Kanye West, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and more. Buy now on iTunes or Amazon! The Atlanta native is in full album mode. All week he will be doing promo, press & public appearances. Complex magazine caught up with 2 Chainz while he was in Baltimore. During his interview, he talks about people criticizing his music, being satisfied with the outcome of his album, having a number one single, playing college basketball, G.O.O.D. Music and much more. Below are some excerpts:

If someone has a criticism of your music—like, some people think your rhyming style isn’t up to their standards—do you think that sometimes it isn’t hate, but that there’s something you could learn from that person’s perspective?
Everybody has their own opinion. Hating is a word I hate to use; it’s so over-saturated. I don’t feel like everybody is a hater. A person does have an opinion of their own. It’s just always cool to have a reason why. I think that’s what people look for: OK, if you don’t like it then why? You gon’ have to have a reason at the end of the day.

Are you fully satisfied with this album? Do you feel you had time to make the perfect project that you wanted to make? Or do you have those “Damn, I could’ve done this,” type of moments?
I have a studio everywhere I go. I wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t a time issue. It’s almost perfect because we have the No. 1 song with “No Lie,” another song up and running—”Birthday Song” featuring Kanye—and I couldn’t ask for a better set up. I mean, people actually want my album before it comes out. I remember when we did that with a couple of albums in the past. I remember the new Hov when he was retired. That Black Album. I wanted that. So I just feel that it’s cool to have that anticipation. People want to hear my music. It makes it more about the music, too.

What are you thinking about for the next single?
I really like this record “In Town” with Mike Posner. That’s my friend. Cool-ass dude. I got the “Extremely Blessed” record with Dream. I got the video to “I Luv Dem Strippers” with Nicki Minaj. It was fun doing that.
