People CAN’T Get Enough Of This Topic: A$AP Rocky Speaks On Homophobia In Hip-Hop

This Harlemite was introduced to the world over this past summer 2011, with his dope singles “Peso” and “Purple Swag”. Together, the singles are nearing a combined eight million views. Before this 24-year-old rapper released his debut mixtape, entitled LiveLoveA$AP, he had already secured a $3 million distribution deal with RCA/Pologrounds. Rocky’s sound was heavily influenced by the South (Houston). He is working on his debut solo album, an A$AP Mob compilation album and a collabo album with Schoolboy Q. Last week, Rocky hit the road with Drake and Kendrick Lamar as part of the “Club Paradise” tour.

One of the biggest topics in the music industry, that people CAN’T get enough of is homophobia in Hip-Hop. In a recent interview with Spinner, A$AP Rocky spoke about homophobia in Hip-Hop. Below are some excerpts:

“I don’t give a f— about your business,” ASAP Rocky tells Spinner. “Man, if you’re gay we can be friends. If you’re straight, we can be friends. I’m not gay, I don’t plan on being gay, I don’t condone it and I’m not sayin’ I’m against it. I really don’t give a f— and I don’t think anyone should care about what another man’s preference is… unless he’s interested, if you know what I’m sayin’.”

Who gives a f—?” he continues. “I like women. I love women. I’m not going to not be your friend because you like men. As long as you’re a great person and, aside from that, y’know, you don’t bother me and make me uncomfortable, then let’s be friends, dude.

It doesn’t matter. You don’t see people for being gay. People need to leave gay people the f— alone. Like, who cares? If you still care about s— like that you need to just hang yourself like the rest of them KKK motherf—ers. For real. Who gives a f—?

What bothers ASAP Rocky most is that he figures things like homophobia are bad for his music.

“I’m not saying that hip-hop needs gay rappers or anything,” he says, “but they need to stop being so close-minded because that will just cause the genre to fail. Look at pop. Pop doesn’t discriminate against people. Look at Lady Gaga, y’know what I mean? Who the f— makes the rules for hip-hop? Who the f— dictates who’s cool and who’s not? F— you.”

ASAP Rocky figures there are better reasons to hate someone than who a person chooses to have sex with, and he feels hip-hoppers should be more accepting.

“[Hate a person] because they’re a thief or a bad person,” he says. “Don’t hate ‘em for what they choose to do, because they make decisions on their own time what they choose to do. I don’t care and it’s like f—ed up that hip-hop is so retarded. They don’t want to accept nothing.”

He’s Not From Houston But He Rap-A-Lot: A$AP Rocky Speaks On Being Introduced To Houston Rap, Dipset, Big L & Doing An Album With Schoolboy Q

I remember last summer when I was inside the barber shop in Harlem, over on 123rd and Lexington, I first heard A$AP Rocky’s single “Purple Swag.” He didn’t even have a deal at that time but he was already buzzing in the streets of NYC, thanks to the Interweb. Rocky does not sound like the average New York rapper. His sound was heavily influenced by the South (Houston). Exclaim! sat down with Rocky for an interview. He talked about when he first was introduced to Houston rap, Dipset, Big L, doing a collabo album with Schoolboy Q and much more. Below are some excerpts:

You grew up in Harlem. What were you listening to as an uptown kid?
Wu-Tang Clan, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, that’s about it.

How did you get introduced to Houston rap?
It was mostly through [crew member/business manager] A$AP Yams, it hit the scene pretty hard in 2003 until 2006. It stuck onto me. When I joined A$AP, they were into the whole Houston culture, sipping lean, all that other shit, so it was just natural.

What about the Houston sound and culture clicked for you?
Because nobody else was doing it no more. I really love it, I enjoy it. I spoke to a wise man not too long ago, he said he didn’t make up the “Fo shizzle nizzle my dizzle”, but he said it was a rapper in the Bay [Area] by the name of E-40. But he said that he created it, and people kinda said he was the creator of [that slang]. And that’s all I’m doing right now. You couldn’t tell the Wu-Tang Clan that they weren’t influenced by the Shaolin Temple. They never been there before, they probably didn’t even know any Asian people! But they went hard with that. That’s how it is with A$AP and Houston. Same thing.

A Dope Rapper With An Eye For Fashion: A$AP Rocky Talks Fashion In The Latest Issue Of SNEEZE Magazine

You guys should know who A$AP Rocky is by now. The Harlem rapper is one of the dopest new artists in the music industry. Last October, this 24-year-old rapper signed a $3 million deal with RCA/Pologrounds and dropped his debut mixtape LiveLoveASAP. The Harlemite is featured in the new issue of NYC/Vancouver-based magazine SNEEZE. Writer Joe La Puma sat down with Rocky for an exclusive interview. In it, Rocky talked about getting his style from his brother, being a trendsetter, getting free clothing and f**king with label executives. Below are some excerpts:

You’re definitely a fashion-forward dude, where did you get your fashion-sense from?

My brother taught me how to style. Like, he was light-skinned with all the girls and shit. His nickname was “Pretty Ricky,” so he used to get all the girls and I was like, “I want to be like him.” He was “Pretty Ricky” and I’m that “Pretty Motherfucker” and I’m trying to walk in his shoes. Honestly, I wear whatever I don’t see everybody else wearing. Like these are black ACNE jeans. They look regular, but not many people are wearing these. I like that. Then I have my fucking army coat ’cause I’m still gutter, and Timbs on ‘cause I still do this. This is just for sound check, wait till you see what I have on tonight. Might come through with some Alexander Wang, stylin’ on motherfuckers yo, Rick Owens and shit.

Have you always been a trendsetter?

Hell fuckin’ yeah! In high school I had all the hoes on my dick. Ask anybody man, I used to go to high school around the corner from here. The School for the Humanities, it’s right around the corner from where we are right now and I used to have all the hoes. All the hoes.

I bet now you’re getting a lot of free shit.

Oh, hell yeah, but not from the brands I really want free stuff from. Raf Simons didn’t call me, Jeremy Scott still didn’t call me, Rick Owens didn’t. They might soon, hopefully.

How fun was it fucking with label execs?

Oh my God! One executive, he wanted me to come to his office and I’m like, “Yo, you got to take me shopping at Barneys first because I got to look presentable for the interview. If you don’t, then I can’t come.” I told him I needed these new Lanvin shoes and Marc Jacobs pants, and to make sure he had them. He was like, “You’ll get it Monday, don’t worry about it.” I was like, “No, it’s not going to happen.” He ended up going, and missing his flight to LA. After it he was like, “You made me late for my flight motherfucker.” That was fun.
