New York’s Hot 97′s Summer Jam 2013 returned this year for their 20th anniversary at New Jersey’s Met Life Stadium and yours truly (Don Bleek) was in the press booth reporting/blogging live. Artists including Joe Budden, Miguel, Wale, Chris Brown, Fabolous, Wu-Tang Clan, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and this year’s headliner French Montana all performed on the main stage. Tons of surprise guests such as Lil Kim, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston and more also performed at last night’s event.
Celebrating Hot 97′s Summer Jam 20th anniversary, the main event started at 6:30 p.m. with Dirty Jerz rapper Joe Budden. He took the stage in a denim shirt and camo pants paired with Timberland boots. Budden performed tracks including “Pump It Up,” “She Don’t Put It Dow” Ft. Tank who was one of his special guests. Budden also brought out his Slaughterhouse comrade, Joell Ortiz during his set.
After Budden exited the stage, Miguel sexed it up for the ladies. He performed his chart-topping and Grammy Award winning single “Adore” and other tracks off his latest album, Kaleidoscope Dream. Miguel brought out Roc Nation’s rapper J. Cole for “Power Trip,” which will appear on J. Cole’s upcoming album, Born Sinner. The album arrives June 18. Before ending his segment, Miguel pulled out Mariah Carey for “Beautiful“.
D.C.’s Wale was next up to the plate. He opened his set with “Lotus Flower Bomb,” followed by “Lightout” and “Bad“. Wale also brought out his MMG partner Meek Mill who performed “Imma Boss,”House Party” and “It’s Levels To This S**t”.
Chris Brown followed with an amazing performance. He kicked off his segment with “Beautiful People“. Brown was one of my favorite performers of the night. His choreography and singing was on point. He added some Caribbean flavor to his set by bringing out Sean Kingston for “Beat It“. Brown closed out his set with “Ready,” bringing out Fabolous.
After performing “Ready” with Chris Brown, Fab continued his set by performing “Body Ya,” “Killin Em,” and “Life Is So Exciting,” bringing out Pusha T who also performed his verse to “I Don’t Like“. Fab showed hometown pride by bringing out Lil Kim. She performed “Queen B***h” off her debut album, Hard Core. Lil Kim’s long-time rival Foxy Brown was also backstage and it is rumored that she was supposed to join Fab on stage; however his set was cut short. It is also being reported that something went wrong with Foxy’s earpiece. Fab also brought out Meek Mill for their Dreamchasers collabo, “Racked Up Shorty.”
Legendary Hip-Hop duo Wu Tang Clan held it down for all the real Hip-Hop fans. They performed a lot of their 90′s era tracks. The Wu woke up the new school and gave us a classic lesson on real Hip-Hop.
2 Chainz brought his Atlanta style to NJ/NY by performing cuts from his debut Based On A Tru Story. He surprised the crowd by bringing out YMCMB’s femcee Nicki Minaj for “I Love Dem Strippers” and “Beez In The Trap“. Before leaving the stage, 2 Chainz premiered his new single, “Feds Watching“.
A$AP Rocky and his Harlem A$AP Mob invaded Summer Jam. Rocky took the stage and performed various cuts from his Long.Live.A$AP debut album. He brought out old skool rap duo, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone and Wishbone for “Thuggish Ruggish Bone.” A$AP Ferg also performed his “Work (Remix)” with Trinidad James and ScHoolboy Q.
NY/NJ showed West coast rapper Kendrick Lamar a lot of love last night at Met Life. K. Dot along with his Black Hippy crew held it down. K. Dot still commanded the stage in the pouring rain. He ran through cuts off his debut, good kid, m.A.A.D city. He called on Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q during his almost 30-minutes set. Jay-Z was backstage with Beyoncé and it is rumored that he was supposed to come out with either Kendrick or Fabolous, but I don’t really know what happened.
This year’s headliner, French Montana closed out the show. Unfortunately, his set was cut short, very short, it only lasted nine-minutes. According to Hot 97′s PD, Ebro, the heavy rain cut French’s set. However he did managed to perform a medley of his club bangers before being joined by Rick Ross and Lil Wayne for “Pop That.” As soon as he got into, “Ain’t Worried Bout Nothing,” his set was cut.
Special thanks to Hot 97 and Emmis Media for the press passes. I really enjoy this year’s show and I am looking forward to the next one. Until 2014, God Bless and have a great/safe summer.
